What is this top bar called and how do I change it.

So I'm very new to nexus and layers. I want to know how to get rid or change this ugly top bar. I feel like I'm an idiot and there is a way to change it in the settings but could not find any.
I'm on the latest pure nexus on a nexus 6p.
