3rd party SMS apps are causing com.android.phone to crash (dual SIM phone)

I have a Dual SIM S7 Edge and installed a few 3rd party SMS apps that I normally use: Textra and chompSMS. Unfortunately I noticed that whenever I sent or receive an MMS with these apps as the default, it causes "com.android.phone" to crash dozens of times in a row, and the MMS never goes through. The system tray also shows the signal strength bar turn into an X, making it appear that the entire cell stack is failing and restarting. It eventually does recover after a few minutes and works fine for normal texting -- until another MMS comes in.

Oddly enough the samsung Messages app and Google's Messenger sms app work fine, so I'm not sure what's going on. Is anyone else with a Dual SIM phone experiencing this? I'd like to confirm before I factory reset.

Thanks!
