Released late last year, the Motorola Moto X4 is Project Fi's first Android One device. It received the official Android Oreo update in December, but this week the official Android 8.1 Oreo update is starting to roll out to users. However, the update has produced a lot of headaches for users, so it's recommended that you stay away from it for now.
The update rolling out to users this week (via 9to5Google)brings Android 8.1 along with April 1st security patches. (A security patch date of April 1st means that it has all the latest Android framework patches but not the latest vendor patches.) The surface level improvements of Android 8.1 over Android 8.0 include features such as the automatic dark theme switch, the revamped power menu, and a couple of other under-the-hood changes.

While it's possible to sideload the official update thanks to files captured by XDA Senior Member Neffy27, we recommend you hold off on that. The reason is that the update apparently breaks USB connectivity (but thankfully not charging) for many users. MTP for file transfer, ADB for development/debugging, and USB connection for Android Auto are all reported to be broken. These functions can't be replaced, so it's best to wait for Motorola to roll out a fixed build of Android 8.1 Oreo.
