The Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ are among the highlight releases of this year. Samsung's implementation of curved displays coupled with a push towards minimizing bezel gave us beautiful flagship devices that wowed many customers.
A side effect of the beautiful front of the device is that Samsung had to take a tough decision on how to go about implementing the fingerprint sensor on the device. Early leaks and reports for the S8 mentioned that it might be the first device from Samsung to feature an On-Screen fingerprint scanner. The buttonless front would be accompanied by an optical fingerprint sensor, much like the Synaptics FS9100.
But as we now know, the on-screen fingerprint sensor could not materialize in time for the Samsung galaxy S8. Despite pouring resources into Synaptics fledgling tech, the results were "frustrating" and with Smasung getting backed up by the production schedule, the company dropped the plan for this smartphone. What we ended up getting is the weirdly placed conventional fingerprint sensor on the back, next to the camera module.
Many predicted that the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 would then be the device that will feature this new piece of technology. This would allow Samsung to get rid of the odd rear placement of the fingerprint sensor and bring about a differentiating feature to the Note 8.
Latest reports however do not bring good news on this front. As reported by Naver from South Korea, the Galaxy Note 8 may also not see an on-screen fingerprint sensor implementation. A Samsung official is quoted to have said:
We made every effort to install a display-integrated fingerprint sensor on Galaxy Note 8, but we decided not to install it on this strategic phone due to various technical limitations such as security.
Interestingly, it is said that Apple has succeeded in implementing the technology on the iPhone 8 despite facing similar difficulties. The iPhone 8 expected later this year is rumored to sport a full screen design that eliminates the home button and opts for a fingerprint sensor on the display.
The report mentions that Samsung will continue on with research and development of this technology.Hopefully, the technology is ready on time for the next S-series device.
