OnePlus Finally Confirms No Official Android Nougat Update for the OnePlus 2

It's over — OnePlus will not deliver the long-awaited Android 7.0 Nougat update to the OnePlus 2, as Android Authority reports. Through this confirmation, OnePlus has broken the promise that it made to users of the OnePlus 2.

The OnePlus 2 was announced in July 2015, coming preloaded with Android 5.1.1. OnePlus ambitiously labeled the device as the '2016 Flagship Killer'. The phone was later updated to Android 6.0 in mid-2016, but not without a lot of waiting on the user's end. Now, the company has essentially killed its flagship killer by not delivering on its Nougat promise. Many would agree that OnePlus should pick their marketing slogan more carefully next time.

OnePlus stated that "customer service has been telling customers these news for a little while" and that "people should be aware of it". While this indeed comes as no surprise, the decision leaves a bad taste in our mouths as the company did not officially announce this through their conventional announcement mediums which are otherwise frequently made use of. It also puts into question similar promises made towards the OnePlus 3/3T for an eventual Android O upgrade, as they just did break the same for the OnePlus 2.

When asked why the OnePlus 2 will not get a Nougat update, the company said:

"When we built the OnePlus 2, we didn't have the software infrastructure team in place we do now."

The company declined to comment further. Moderators on the OnePlus forums advised readers to take Android Authority's news with a grain of salt as it only cited forum posts as its sources, without realizing that OnePlus broke the news to Android Authority directly. The same moderators also could not specify when OnePlus plans to release an update either, or if at all the update is still under works.

OnePlus should consider ending this drama by releasing an official statement through their forum or other platforms, and telling its users when or if the OnePlus 2 will receive an official Nougat update. By spreading inconclusive information through unconventional channels that leaves even forum moderators in doubt, OnePlus is making things bad for itself right when it has a new flagship killer to announce.
