Android O Developer Preview 3 Rolling Out with Final Android O APIs

Google is giving Android users a treat with a new Developer Preview release. Developer Preview 3 is rolling out today onwards with the final Android O APIs in place, giving developers a chance to make sure their apps are ready for the new update when it goes stable and public.

The highlight of this release according to Google is the finalization of Android O API level 26. Application developers can now begin work on making sure their apps are up-to-date on compatibility and features with the upcoming Android O public release, without worrying about any more changes that may occur in the Android O APIs.

Google is advising developers to make sure their app is compatible with Android O. Apps on O should handle the behavior changes properly, with Google advising focus towards background limits and changes in networking, security and identifiers. Once your app is updated with compatibility changes, Google recommends publishing the compatible version of your app to Google Play without changing the app's platform targeting at first. Once you have made sure your app runs well on older versions as well, you can target API 26 in you alpha, beta or even production channels on Google Play depending on your needs.

You can download the final API 26 SDK from the SDK Manager in Android Studio. To see what has changed in the APIs since the second developer preview, check out the diff report.

The Android O Developer Preview 3 is intended for developer use and is not targeted towards end users. Expectedly, there are a few bugs and known issues that may arise from time to time. Google mentions that system and app performance is known to be periodically slow and janky with the device often becoming unresponsive. Battery life is also likely inferior, which is again something that one normally expects in Developer Previews. Other issues are mentioned over at the release page, so we recommend interested flashers to give it a read before installing the update.

With the launch of Developer Preview 3, we are one step closer to the final launch of Android O. And we just can't wait!
