Samsung Completes Qualification of 10LPP, its 2nd Gen 10nm Process Technology

Samsung Electronics announced that it has completed the qualification procedure for its 10-nanometer FinFET process technology and is now ready to move ahead for production.

The second generation of Samsung's 10nm FinFET process technology is referred to as 10LPP (Low Power Plus). 10LPP builds up on the first generation 10LPE (Low Power Early) process. With further enhancements in the 3D FinFET structure, 10LPP allows up to 10% performance or 15% lower power consumption when compared to the first generation 10LPE process with the same area scaling.

"With our successful 10LPE production experience, we have commenced production of the 10LPP to maintain our leadership in the advanced-node foundry market. 10LPP will be one of our key process offerings for high performance mobile, computing and network applications, and Samsung will continue to offer the most advanced logic process technology."

— Ryan Lee, Vice President of Foundry Marketing, Samsung Electronics

To meet long term demands for the 10nm process for its sister units as well as for other customers, Samsung has started installing production equipment at its newest S3-line in Hwaseong, Korea. The S3-line is expected to be ready for production by Q4 2017.

The first generation 10LPE process powers the current generation of flagship offerings from Samsung and other OEMs that use SoCs from Samsung or Qualcomm. It is unclear on when we can expect devices with chips built on the 10LPP process.
